Sonnet for Austerity

Quebec’s grand debt is both gross and net
It runs deeper than an iron ore mine
The interest alone we’d like to forget
But it could explain our long decline.
Subsequent governments appease voters
By spending millions on each line item
There’s hardly any checks on promoters
Cheques! Our gov knows how to write ’em.
The onus thus falls on the head of Finance
To decide how to make a million cuts
Jobs will be trimmed perchance
The deed to succeed will take guts.
The peach we call austerity
Will test the plum’s popularity.
